2013年1月14日，联合国大会正式批准联合国教科文组织世界无线电日的决议。联合国教科文组织将每年的2月13日定为“World Radio Day”，即“世界无线电日”。
第67届联合国大会期间通过了联合国教科文组织第36届大会宣布的将2月13日（联合国电台于1946年这一天成立）作为世界无线电日的决定。
联合国设立世界无线电日是旨在宣传无线电作为通信载体，在促进教育发展、信息传播以及自然灾害中重大信息发布等方面所发挥的重要作用。
